Financial Modeling and Data Analysis with Excel

Sandon Associates has using Excel to develop complex financial models and data analysis systems since 1992. The current versions of Excel with Visual Basic for Applications provide a great deal of functionality to create customized solutions for a variety of business requirements that are easy users to operate. The following are some of the models that have been developed:

  • Financial Forecasting - The users enter monthly head counts, salary plans, departmental expenses and annual increases. Sales can be forecasted in several ways. Income and expenses such as depreciation are integrated with balance sheet. Departmental and corporate results can be viewed and printed.

  • Assay screening for biotech - High-speed screening systems create extensive data that needs to be analyzed to determine chemical and biological responses. Data is loaded from the instrument, formatted in standard lab book format, graphically analyzed and significant compounds identified. The results are extracted for uploading to an Oracle database for correlations with chemical structures.

  • Matrix approach for generating General Leger accounts - Developing the chart of accounts with a matrix approach facilitates the multi dimensional view of the financial management requirements of a business. Excel is used for creating, displaying and importing the chart of accounts into accounting systems.

  • Semiconductor Fab Plant Model - There are hundreds of process steps in fab plants that need various types of testing tools to provide high yields. A system was developed to model the fab processes, allow for variable inputs, graph tool requirements vs. wafer starts and calculate prices and the sales opportunity.

  • Product Adoption Analysis -Based upon the Fab model, purchase order data is extracted from the accounting system, and an evaluation of product adoption is done.

  • Commission Calculations - The software industry tends to have complex commission structures with rules that change frequently, including stair-step rates, payments on sale/install, multiple persons paid on the same transactions, product bonuses, etc. A number of commission systems have been developed over the years that can be easily modified and changed to respond to changing commission plans and structures.

  • Budget Consolidation - A departmental budget workbook was created for each department with last year's actuals and the current forecast. A system was developed to consolidate all the departmental budgets into a corporate budget.
